In the past, the majority of CAD systems placed a heavy emphasis on geometry - if you wanted to detail a complex assembly, you did it by drawing simple graphic primitives like lines or arcs. Modern CAD systems treat such items as objects, discrete software components which simulate real-world components.

Objects may contain almost any property of the item they represent - not only 2D/3D geometry, but any characteristic you would look for in a catalogue: sizing options, cost, materials, colours, variations, product codes, and manufacturer details. A specifier need only select the object they wish to use, select the settings they require, and place it in their design model. The object will automatically respond to every variation, redrawing itself accordingly, and can be listed in all relevant schedules.

Encina develops components with GDL, a state-of-the-art object technology from Graphisoft. Those who stand to gain the most from this technology are:

Manufacturers - Deliver your products to specifiers faster and cheaper than traditional catalogues, either on CD or directly from the Web. The intelligence built into the objects will enable them to be specified quickly and accurately.

Designers - Object technology is just as relevant to custom design to facilitate rapid variation, accurate representation, and a high standard of communication with clients, manufacturers, and fitters.
